Questions, answered
The things people ask us most. Can’t find yours? Write to us and we’ll answer.
How often should I see a dentist?
For most people a check-up and clean about every six months works well. If you have gum problems, braces or a history of cavities, we may suggest coming more often. We’ll tell you what suits you.
Does a check-up hurt?
A routine check-up and clean shouldn’t hurt. You might feel some pressure or sensitivity, and you can tell us to stop at any moment. Nothing happens without us explaining it first.
I’m afraid of the dentist. Can you help?
Many people are, and you’re welcome here. Tell us when you book. We’ll go slowly, explain each step and agree a stop signal with you before we begin.
What should I do about a toothache?
Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid very hot or cold food, and don’t put painkillers directly on the gum. Then contact us as soon as you can, because pain usually means something needs looking at.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Whitening done after an examination is generally safe. We check your teeth and gums first, because fillings and sensitive teeth change what’s suitable. Some temporary sensitivity is common.
How do I care for my teeth at home?
Brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day, and keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes. Replace your toothbrush every three months or so.
When should my child first see a dentist?
Soon after the first teeth appear is a good time, and certainly by their first birthday or soon after. Early visits are short and gentle, and help children see the dentist as normal.
